Path leading down from Pico Ruivo (1862m), the highest peak in Madeira, towards Encumeada. That's my dad on the road ahead!

Protected islands in Ponta de São Lourenço Madeira

Protected islands in Ponta de São Lourenço Madeira

The Eastern most tip of Madeira, Portugal - Ponta de São Lourenço.

These outer islands are protected nature reserves and out of bounds for humans. This protects rare birds and plants some of which are unique to Madeira.

The island on the horizon is part of Ilhas Desertas, another nature reserve almost all of which is off limits.

The Fog Is Rolling In

The Fog Is Rolling In

From my recent trip to Madeira.

We're about an hour into our trek from Encumeada up towards Pico Ruivo, and the fog has started to roll in.

Makes for some dramatic shots as it comes in, but eventually we couldn't see anything!

Red-Legged Partridge

Red-Legged Partridge

Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris Rufa) photographed in Madeira on a recent trip. It was perched nicely near Pico Arieiro at about 1750m surveying the valley below.

It was happy to sit there for quite some time while all the tourists took pictures, although they can't have been getting much without long lenses.

Luckily I had my 70-200mm with me. This is pretty much a 1:1 crop at 200mm.

Madeira has these incredible rock details where you can see how the lava has flowed through an earlier layer of rock.

Fire and Brimstone

Fire and Brimstone

This shot is taken on the road from Pico Ruivo to Encumeada in Madeira, Portugal.

The fog is just coming in, and with the dead trees from a recent forest fire in the foreground, it looks pretty ominous!

There are some absolutely amazing colours of the volcanic rock in Madeira. You can see evidence of different volcanic processes that have happened at different times (although I don't exactly understand how it works).

This picture is taken just below Pico das Torres at about 1800m. You pass below this peak on the walk from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo.

Photo from my recent trip to Madeira, this is a view towards the main part of Madeira from the peninsula of Ponta de São Lourenço.

If you look very carefully you can see all the tourists walking along the ridge in the distance.

The far eastern tip of Madeira is a long peninsula with beautiful views and a nice walk.

This is the view from the parking lot towards the small peak in the distance that our walk took us to.
